Our Riverhead cruises are a great day out for any occasion large or small with a variety of options to choose from. We can cater for large groups and parties with our exclusive hire options or else small groups and individuals can join our public ferry which operates daily cruises to the historic Riverhead Historic tavern. (Note) The Riverhead trip is tidal and so departure times are based on this.
Exclusive Hire:
Our private charter options are a great way to celebrate any occasion for larger groups. This is a fantastic way to celebrate birthdays, social clubs and special occasions, or the ideal Venue to hold that end-of-year Xmas function or corporate event. Our private charters are suited to more of a party / get-together-type trip. There is a minimum charge to hire the Vessel exclusively. When using our private hire option, you will have a licensed bar on board for your use, and we provide nibbles on the cruise to Riverhead. You will also have access to our onboard music system. Public Ferry:
We operate regular public trips to the Riverhead all year round. These are scheduled sailings and times can be viewed on our timetable. Our public cruises are a great family day out and suited for individuals or small groups of 15 or less. Departing from downtown Auckland we retrace the footsteps of the early settlers that traveled these waterways to Riverhead on scows and steamers. We provide a full commentary throughout the cruise and have a licensed bar on board for your convenience which sells snacks and refreshments. Although we play some light background music on the return trip to Auckland, this trip is suited more to those who want to enjoy a nice day out with family and friends for an informative tour. About The Historic Riverhead Tavern
The historic Riverhead tavern has been serving refreshments to patrons for about 160 years! This makes it one of the oldest surviving taverns in New Zealand.
Over the years, the tavern has recieved hundreds of fascinating people from all walks of life, each with incredible stories to tell, each leaving a little bit of history behind. For well over a century, fishermen, townsfolk and countrymen alike have all enjoyed a beer or ale at the Riverhead tavern, sharing stories and making memories together.
Farmers, clergymen, smugglers, soldiers, the constabulary and even mysterious marauding riders have all, at one point or another, wet their lips at the bar, making the Riverhead tavern a venue like no other.
Still going strong today, the Riverhead tavern won the Best Destination Venue award for excellence in hospitality in New Zealand in 2021 and was awarded the badge of Travellers’ Choice by Tripadvisor in 2022.
- Riverhead’s Three Venues
The gorgeous venue has undergone several significant renovations over the years and now features three distinct sections for patrons to visit: The Landing Restaurant, The Portage Bar and The Boat House Function Centre – all forming part of Riverhead.
The Landing restaurant features a delectable a la carte menu with delicious meals made from premium, locally-sourced ingredients. Enjoy a meal on the airy deck under the shade of 100-year-old oak trees and soak in the scenery.
The Portage Bar is where you will get to see the history of Riverhead plastered all over the walls around you as you savour a refreshing drink and share stories with friends. Enjoy a game of pool or watch a live sporting match on the television. It’s a great place to unwind – just like thousands of folks have done over 160 years.
Lastly, the Boat House function centre is one of the most unique and gorgeous function venues near Auckland. It is the perfect place to host weddings, corporate functions, family functions, big birthday celebrations and more. The venue benefits from the same level of catering and hospitality enjoyed at the Portage Bar and the Landing Restaurant, so you know it will be great.
